Field Notes grew directly from the studio’s surroundings. Set within ten hectares of forest, meadowland, and river, the landscape enters the work as a natural progression, not a style shift, but a gradual opening into colour and living reference. Beneath the surface sit faint images drawn from nature, birds, insects, plant forms, fragments of observation that drift in and out rather than declare themselves.
Built through layering and pressure, folds of recycled paper create a heavily textured ground, while found fragments and reclaimed elements embed themselves into the structure. Botanicals gathered, pressed, and preserved, including rose and lavender, are held within the surface, making the work feel both constructed and grown.
Watercolour carries softness and translucency, while oil deepens shadows and accents, building depth that recalls undergrowth, hollows, and weathered edges. The result is a quiet record, part memory, part archive. It does not depict the landscape, it carries it, through material, imprint, and tone, inviting slow looking, attentive viewing, and meaning that gathers over time.
The Illusionist is suited to interiors that favour raw materiality and a more grounded, tactile aesthetic. Built on reclaimed wood, the piece carries a strong physical presence, making it particularly effective in contemporary living spaces, studios, or architectural interiors where texture and authenticity are central to the design.
Its horizontal format lends itself to placement above sofas, sideboards, or within wider wall spans, where the natural grain and layered surface can be experienced both as a whole and in detail. From a distance, the composition reads as a restrained, tonal field; up close, the interplay between wood, surface, and material reveals depth and subtle variation.
It pairs naturally with materials such as timber, metal, concrete, and leather, making it well suited to interiors that balance industrial elements with warmth and natural texture.
